The next History Walk will be on Saturday, June 25 at 10 AM. Visit the library’s event page to register.

On our first History Walk of the Fanno Creek Trail on May 14, the weather cooperated for a nice day. We noted the Aaron Frank Farm, Firlock Station, former Girl Scout campgrounds, Fredrickson bulletin board materials, Portland Golf Club trail to first club house, train wreck of 47 cars, conflict with the sewage pumping stations, trail art, Augustus Fanno, Fanno Creek, and concluding at Vista Brook Park checking out the ducks on the lake.

Old Market Pub fire and re-opening

The historic Old Market Pub has re-opened after the building suffered a kitchen fire and extensive smoke damage on March 28, 2022. The fire propelled them into a major reorganization, painting and repairs of the popular Pub at the convergence of Multnomah Boulevard and Garden Home Road.

We plan to have an event in the back room when it is available. Pizza and drinks! Presenting Garden Home of the early 1900s, rail station, Red store, Cannery, then Whitneys, Comellas, and finally the Old Market Pub!

Remembering Gerry Frank

September 21, 1923 to March 13, 2022

We were sorry to learn of Gerry Frank’s passing on March 13, 2022, aged 98. Gerry was born on September 21, 1923 in Portland to Aaron and Ruth Frank. They lived in SW Portland and Gerry attended Ainsworth and Lincoln High School. In the 1920s, his parents bought the Frank Farm property here in Garden Home (now the Frank Estate condos) so that they could send their show horses to events around the nation. Aaron Frank had a siding developed beside the railroad tracks, near the Firlock Station train stop, now SW 78th Avenue. They could then load the horses into the special cars to travel to California or New York’s Madison Square Garden and elsewhere. The Frank Farm was part of the “horse culture” in Garden Home, along with the Hunt Club, and the two riding academies, all along SW Oleson Road, south of the school.

Our first interview with Gerry was in 2010 when Virginia Vanture and I met with Gerry in his two-room office in Salem. His walls were covered with photos of him meeting with various world leaders, part of his role as Chief of Staff for our U.S. Senator Mark Hatfield for twenty years. His family began the Meier & Frank Department store and he was the Manager of the first store in Salem. He served in Patton’s Third Army during WWII, and helped liberate the first concentration camp in Ohrduff, Germany.

Our Gerry Frank story tells the incredible story of Gerry’s life and his commitment to Oregon and to our nation. See our display memorializing Gerry in the Garden Home Community Library. He has honored us with the gift of 50 special horse photographs and the guest book with hundreds of names from the notable Frank Farm stables here in Garden Home.

See the Garden Home History calendars display in our library this month

These calendars feature the history of Garden Home in photos and text. Our 2012 calendar shows the Gertsch dairy farm portrait with the horses, wagons, barn, milk wagons, prize bull, and owners. Each month features GH in the early 1900s with the families, church, school, cemetery, cannery, and baseball team!

The 2013 calendar features the neighborhoods and businesses including Lamb’s Thriftwy, Frank farm, and many families. Events were covered in the 2014 calendar with our famous Dorothy Johnson memoralizing FDR’s death with a bouquet in front of our Post Office. The school opening in 1912 and closing in 1982, Library history, Oleson Road reconstruction, Fanno Creek trail, church, fire, and more.

The colorful 2015 calendars traced Garden Home down through the decades, including the WWII fighter plane crash, Thriftway, Rummer homes, school closure, and adult baseball teams. My favorite page is the November photo of the cutest young Library customer trying to carry her books.

The Garden Home History Project offered these calendars for sale in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015. The first four calendars were developed by Elaine Shreve and Delia Day. The 2015 calendar’s contents were developed by Elaine Shreve and the calendar designed by Gordon Melcher (they all sold!).

We have a few extra 2013 and 2014 calendars which can each be purchased for $10. Send requests for a mailing, to our Treasurer, Marie Pacella, 7240 SW 82nd, Portland, OR 97223.

Coming: We are working with the Library to share a resident’s collection of pop-up books along with the Library featuring a customer activity to make your own pop-up book. Have a collection you’d like to share? Let us know.
