Andy Friedle Dignan

Andy Friedle Dignan

July 12, 1932 to August 9, 2022

Andy passed away peacefully of natural causes in the presence of close family.

Born Agnes Ann Friedle to Frank and Alma, it was not until age 8 that a deaf classmate gave her the forever-beloved nickname, “Andy.” The following years found her and her younger brother Fred at 40 Mile Camp in the Yukon. Her dad, as a mining engineer, as well her reluctant mom, a teacher, were chasing Klondike gold. Then Andy contracted polio at age 11. A heroic winter trip by horse drawn sleigh to needed care in Dawson, is a story in itself.

A year later and back home in Portland, Andy attended Cathedral Grade School, St. Mary’s Academy, then graduated from Lincoln High School with the unusually close-knit class of 1949. Pledging Pi Phi at the University of Oregon, she met Pat Dignan and earned a BA in history. Upon graduation they married and began a magnificent 67 year journey until Pat’s passing this past year. Pat became an officer in the Air Force and they moved to Long Island where they met lifelong friends. This was her gift to all, making lasting friends everywhere including those during their extensive travels abroad. The dynamic duo filled 67 wonderful years of marriage resulting in three children: Todd, Laurie, and Teddy. Traditions were established early including annual trips to Timberline Lodge and the family’s beach cabin at Tierra del Mar. We gathered together for everything imaginable. She and Pat were longtime Duck supporters and season ticket holders. Pat climbed the ladder at Northwest Natural Gas, retiring as Vice President of Marketing which made Andy very proud. Mom juggled Pat’s career, family, and hosted countless gatherings while, again, making more lifelong friends. Andy balanced all, including leadership and deep involvement in many organizations, her children’s schools, chairing the Junior League of Portland, Albertina Kerr, and was Chaperone to the 1969 Rose Festival Court. She founded Business Communication Center in 1979.

Andy is survived by her kid brother, Fred; as well her three children, Todd, Laurie, and Teddy. Her greatest joy were her six grandchildren, Peter, Kristina, Sean, Jenny, Mitchell, and Seamus. On those heels came great-grandchildren, Chloe and Luke, The family’s Matriarch was a tremendously giving person.

Her indomitable spirit showed itself each hour of every day. Never a cross nor derogatory word towards anyone. May she live long in all of us.

These books related to home history are displayed in our History Case in the Garden Home Library. They are of particular interest to owners of older homes and to persons searching for history of their properties. Several books show the display of Sears Roebuck Homes which could be ordered in complete detail for the homeowner to put together. A brief summary and sample page are included for the books displayed.

Three of the books are already in the Library system:

  • A Field Guide to American Houses
  • Where We Lived
  • Discovering the History of Your House

In August, the Library will review several of the books for inclusion in their collection. They will be available through all of the Washington County libraries:

Ever wonder where the street names come from? In this current photo, Crystal Steele is pointing to the street sign with her name on SW 87th Ave. Interestingly, there is only a foot path where the street should be. She was the youngest of the Steele children who grew up in the house which was at 8085 S.W. Westgard in the early 20th Century. Read Jack Steele’s story on our website.

Fanno Creek Trail History Walk

We thank a number of our residents for their assistance in researching history for our two HISTORY WALKS along the Fanno Creek Trail in May and June. We have worked with the Garden Home Library’s Heather Waisanen to develop the plan and handle the registration procedures. Elaine Shreve researched and wrote the script and Elaine and Heather were the leaders. Tom Shreve, our webmaster, began the second walk. Jan Fredrickson, Kevin Mistler, and Stan Houseman assisted with the history. Watch the Library website for the date and registration for the next walk.

The historic Old Market Pub has re-opened after the building suffered a kitchen fire and extensive smoke damage on March 28, 2022. The fire propelled them into a major reorganization, painting and repairs of the popular Pub at the convergence of Multnomah Boulevard and Garden Home Road.

Dr. Shelley C. Reece obituary

April 19, 1936 to December 17, 2021

Dr. Shelley C. Reece

Dr. Shelley C. Reece

Oregon’s Arts and Education communities were diminished by the passing of Dr. Shelley C. Reece last Dec. 17, 2021. Shelley was a devoted husband, father, teacher, mentor, scholar, and poet. Born April 19, 1936 in Havensville, Kan., his Masters and PhD were from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (1967). In 1969, he accepted a position as Professor of English at Portland State. During his 33 years at PSU he served six years as Director of Composition and six more as English Department Chairman. His young family accompanied him to Cambridge on sabbatical for the 1975 academic year. Shelley retired from teaching in 2002 after 43 years in education.

Shelley had many interests. He lent his lyric baritone voice to a multitude of local choirs, facilitated an informal group studying James Joyce’s Ulysses, and enjoyed getting away to the family’s beloved vacation home on Anderson Island. His greatest passion was writing poetry. He wrote daily, sharing his work in a front yard ‘poetry box’ for the community to enjoy. He met monthly with fellow poets for writing workshops, and served 13 years on the board of Friends of William Stafford, including five as Chairman. An advocate of lifelong learning, he earned a Masters of Fine Arts in Poetry from Pacific University (2014). A collection of his poetry titled Nature’s Mind will be published this summer.

Shelley is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary; his daughter, Lesley; and his son, Dan. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Shelley Reece Endowed Scholarship for poetry at: giving.psuf.org/campaign/scholarship

Please share memories of Shelley at: obits.oregonlive.com

Donald Arthur “Smitty” Smith obituary

November 12, 1927 to April 20, 2022

Don Smith

Don Smith

Don Smith passed away peacefully at home in Tigard, Oregon, Wednesday, April 20, 2022, following a month of hospice care surrounded by his family.

Born in Portland, he was raised by his mom Margaret Scherner Smith on a farm in Garden Home in a house without electricity, studying by kerosene lamps. He graduated from the eighth grade in 1941 from Garden Home School’s class of five students then attended Tigard High School and Lewis & Clark College. He served in the Army during the occupation of Japan after World War II, playing the clarinet in the band.

Don lived a long and interesting life working hard doing what he loved, golf. He used to ride his bike with his pals to caddy at Portland Golf Club and worked there cleaning clubs, eventually becoming the Assistant Pro. He went on to become the long-time pro at Forest Hills Golf Club. He joined the local section of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA), serving as an officer in the Oregon branch, as President of the Pacific Northwest Section and served as a PGA National Vice President. Don also taught golf at Eastmoreland before he was recruited to become the PGA Tournament Director for the national PGA of America in Florida where he served for 21 years. He supported 20 PGA Championships, and in his role on the PGA’s National Rules Committee, officiated at two US Opens, 18 Masters championships, and 15 Ryder Cup Matches on both sides of the Atlantic. At his retirement, the PGA said Don developed a nationwide reputation for running tournaments and teaching the Rules of Golf. After returning to Oregon, he would still be called to officiate at golf tournaments and qualifying reviews for new golf pros. He was elected to the PNW PGA Hall of Fame in 1995.

Don Smith

Don Smith

In retirement, he also found more time for his other passion, fishing. He was known to pack a fishing rod to check out the water hazards on golf courses throughout his career, and especially enjoyed bass fishing and was quite proud of his first steelhead in Alaska on his travels with his good friend, Greg Snyder. He and his great-grandson Eman would go trout fishing at Hagg Lake with his son-in-law David supplying the coffee, cinnamon rolls and a customized chair with pole holder and umbrella. He enjoyed feeding the neighborhood squirrels, birds and had exceptionally large goldfish in his backyard pond. He liked to go to the coast to see “if the ocean was still there” and loved to devour fresh crab and steamers. He enjoyed all sports, attending the inaugural season of the Portland Trail Blazers and remaining an avid fan as well as for the Seahawks. He loved eating hot dogs watching the Mariners play baseball and was excited to watch the new Kraken hockey team. And of course, golf. He liked to watch the Seniors and the “ladies” LPGA events, as much as the PGA tour tournaments. He could tell us what was par and the approach to the cup for all the holes at Augusta while we watched the Masters in his final days. He wanted to live forever but told us that getting old was no fun. He leaves behind a legacy of outstanding service to the game of golf, a multitude of friendships, and a deep love of family and any animal that came into the Smith family.

Don is survived by his daughters, Julie Smith, Sue Lyster, and Jeanene Smith; and son-in-law, David Brandt and their family; his former wife, Anna; and stepdaughters, Debbie and Pam. He was preceded in death by his mother; his former wife of over 20 years, Alice Jean Smith whom he cared for in her later years; and his beloved son-in-law, Phil Lyster. The family is extremely grateful for the friendship and support of Pam Evans who provided superb home health care so we could fulfill his wish to age in place, and who could bring a smile to his face especially when they “danced” holding her hand from his hospice bed.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m., June 25, 2022, at Forest Hills Golf Club, for friends and family. Memorial donations may be made to either the PGA REACH, the PGA’s charitable arm that supports access to golf for youth, military, and diverse populations (www.pgareach.org) or the Audubon Society of Portland (audubonportland.org)
